Black Diamond has been manufacturing avalanche safety equipment for over fifty years. In 1957 (when the company was known as Chouinard Equipment), Black Diamond's outstanding innovators set the standard for designing and developing avalanche safety equipment.
In 1972, the Chouinard Ice Screw was released as the first tubular ice screw in the market which allowed skiers and snowboarders to protect themselves more efficiently and securely than ever before.
In 1984, first cable binding was introduced by Chouinard Equipment. In addition to increased side-to-side stability, the Original Cable Binding provided more "snap" between boot and ski for quicker telemark turns.
Then in 1989, the former employees of Chouinard Equipment signed the papers to make the first employee-owned company in the climbing industry official. In that year Black Diamond was born.
In 1992, Black Diamond teamed up with the Italian company SCARPA and introduced the first plastic telemark ski boot called T1. The telemark sport became hugely popular and well reputed in the market due to its innovative design. Later, Black Diamond started designing a wider range of equipment including skis, poles and bindings.
In the year 1998 (October 27) Black Diamond achieved the ISO certification, recognizing their commitment to making the best quality products. Featuring fantastically designed climbing and ski gear; all the products that are released by Black Diamond are tested and user friendly.
Following the onset of the new millennium, Black Diamond have pooled their considerable knowledge and experience in order to release the AvaLung, Avalung safety package, Avalanche shovels , Black Diamond probes which allow the user to stay safe and rescue others from avalanche accidents.
The Black Diamond Avalanche safety products are designed and developed to improve avalanche safety factors. Black Diamond provides a varied set of products that will help a skier or snowboarder escape from an avalanche.
