The Pieps DSP Sport is the dynamic, 3 antenna device for the young freeriding generation.

The long range, single button, intelligent transmitting system provides the best support in any situation.

With a maximum range of 50m and 3 smart antenna this simple to use transceiver is a reliable and effective choice for any off-piste skier.

This transceiver comes with a function called "Old Device Mode" which means your Pieps DSP sport will recognise older transceivers that have a continuous signal, which normally has a negative effect on the ‘Mark’ function of most transceivers.

The next generation of Pieps Transceivers are designed to work alongside the iProbe which will take over in receiving the next strongest signal at the probing stage.

The DSP Sport features the patented triple antenna transceiver combined with advanced digital abilities such as transceiver counting and multiple burial indication in order to rescue buried companions quickly and efficiently.

With its intelligent transmitter (capable of altering your signal timing to avoid overlap with other signals), direction/distance information displayed from the start and different modes to address different situations, the PIEPS DSP makes an ideal tool for experienced users.

The transceiver is designed to cope effectively with multiple burial situations, allowing multiple victims to be pinpointed on the screen at one time. The on screen display is simple to read, and the buried victims are displayed clearly in the graphic.

By measuring the frequency of the beacons, the transceiver will home in on the closest beacon transmitting the strongest frequency, giving you an approximate distance and direction of the buried victim. The other victims are then shown as markers.

For added ease of use, the transceiver categorises the victims according to their distance from you.

One of the most useful features when using the Pieps DSP sport transceiver in multiple burial situations is its ability to work with the iProbe. When using the two devices together, the transceiver can suppress the beacons of those victims that have been scanned, allowing you to then scan for the next victim.

This is one of the most advanced transceivers on the market. Whilst the design is clear and simple, it does require a good deal of practise to get the full benefits of the transceiver, particularly in a multiple burial scenario. As with every transceiver, regular practise is essential.

If skiers are caught out by an avalanche, their companions in the vicinity have their work cut out. They have to locate the victims and dig them out as quickly as possible. The chances of survival diminish rapidly after 18 minutes of burial in the snow. Avalanche transceivers help to drastically reduce search time, maximising the likelihood of a succesful rescue.

Spikes and Burials

  • The distance between the strongest signal and the transmitter is based on the way the two transceivers are positioned and the depth of the burial. This can possibly confuse signals if there in awkward positions and are known as spikes.
  • During deeper avalanche burials, the strongest signal is rarely directly above the victim. Transceivers with fewer than three antennas and some with three antennas will lead you to the strongest signal, which will be a point that is near but not directly above the victim.
  • When the transmitting and receiving beacons are on the surface of the snow, the receiving beacon will receive the strongest signal when it is directly above the transmitter. This is right regardless of the positioning of the two beacons and the number of antennas in the receiving transceiver because the transceivers are only a few inches from each other.

Simple Spike Testing

  1. Put a transmitting beacon between your feet, pointing vertically. Note that this should not be an Ortovox 3+,S1+ or Zoom+ due to there orientation-based transmitting.
  2. Set the transceiver you want to test on Search.
  3. Hold the transceiver horizontally at the height of your chest but so you can still read the screen.
  4. Slowly move the transceiver from about two feet from your body toward the centre of your body. Move it about two inches per beep. Keep the transceiver a consistent distance from the ground and avoid twisting it.
  5. The distance on the transceiver that’s searching should decrease as it moves towards the centre of your body. Transceivers with less then three antennas will display the shortest distance when it is a foot or two away from the centre of your body and again when it is directly over the transmitting transceiver.
  6. This test shows if your transceiver handles spikes at one meter.Spike handling is much more significant with deeper burials.
