Ortovox 3+ Transceiver

Ortovox 3+ Transceiver

This user friendly 3+ digital transceiver from Ortovox incorporates the Patented Smart Antenna technology utilizing intelligent mobile position recognition technology. This analyses the position of the 3+'s three antennas and automatically identifies the optimal transmission antenna.

Avalanche transceivers are essential items of equipment for anyone going off Piste but useless unless the carrier also has a probe and a shovel to dig the victim out.

Since 2013, the Ortovox 3+ Transceiver can now be updated to ensure you get every benefit from Ortovox's continuous development.

The circular and precise illuminated real time display screen clearly indicates the position and distance to the buried victim with directional arrows enabling you to proceed in the right direction (also visible on the readout is the battery consumption). The precision and accuracy of this device reduces the time taken to locate the buried victim, thus maximising the likelihood of a successful rescue. There is also a large safety switch-back to transmit mode button in case of a follow-up avalanche scenario.

This 3+ is also ideal for multiple burials with an overview of the number of victims displayed. After retrieving a victim, there is an option to blend out their signal with the pin key (the 3+ then shows that victim as pinned) allowing you to move on to rescue the remaining people.

Durable ergonomic rubberised housing safely protects the transceiver from the elements, while the light-up display and optimized acoustics make searching at night easier.

This 3+ is accompanied by an elastic cord for practicality and convenience.

If skiers are caught out by an avalanche, their companions in the vicinity have their work cut out. They have to locate the victims and dig them out as quickly as possible. The chances of survival diminish rapidly after 18 minutes of burial in the snow. Using a transceiver can radically reduce search times, thus increasing the chances of a successful rescue.

This Avalanche transceiver can make the difference between life and death. When the tracker shows youíre within 3 metres of the victim, put the beacon to the ground and prepare to use the probe and shovel.

This Ortovox 3+ can be bought in a package which includes a Ortovox Beast Shovel & Ortovox 240 Light PFA probe, This can be purchased HERE.

What are the main differences between the Ortovox Zoom Transceiver and the Ortovox 3+ Transceiver?

This Ortovox 3+ is a small, three-antenna, avalanche transceiver with a range up to 40 meters and has technology that can increase the distance at which other transceivers will receive its signal. The 3+ does an excellent job of suppressing multiple burials and handles spikes well. The display makes it easy to locate the victim, and the 3+ will support software upgrades to keep it as up-to-date as possible. The Ortovox Zoom is a simple, no nonsense, three-antenna avalanche transceiver. The Zoom has a single light that becomes illuminated when it is picking up the signal. The Zoom does not allow you to suppress signals when searching, unlike the 3+.

Being found Easier

3+ Smart Antenna Technology

You will be more easily found with the 3+ Transceiver. The Integrated Smart-Antenna-technology analyzes the position of the antennas in the avalanche. The transceiver automatically switches to the best transmission antenna. You will gain almost double the range in the worst coupling positions, regardless of the beacon used for searching.

3+ Secondary Avalanche Switchover

A motion sensor has recently been added to the 3+ Transceiver to enable Secondary Avalanche switchover. If the sensor has not detected any motion for 120 seconds during the search, it automatically switches back to transmit mode. Thus rescuers can also found if there has been a secondary avalanche.

3+ Recco Reflector

The 3+ is equipped with a RECCO Reflector. Recco helps professional rescuers find victims buried in the snow even faster. The incorporation of a reflector into this device means that rescuers are well equipped should there be any follow-up avalanches.

3+ Fast Find

The presentation of the real-time display is limited to the essentials, making it simple and easy to read. It displays the distance and direction. Once you are in the refined search area, the displayed circle shows whether you are getting closer to the victim or moving away from him/her. Battery status and number of buried/marked victims are also displayed.

3+ Easy Mark

The number of victims is shown in the display. With the "pin" key you can quickly and easily mark located victims and continue the search.

Searching Easier

3+ Intuitive Design

This 3+ transceiver has been reduced to the bare Essentials. With only two buttons, it is almost impossible to use incorrectly. Once switched on, the device can be switched from transmit to search mode using the Safety Switch .Further search instructions are then shown on the Large Display.

3+ Visual & Acoustic Searching

The Circle Diagram in the fine search shows you exactly how far away you are to the Buried Victims and whether you are getting closer to the signal or farther away from it. The lit display is supported by Intuitive search acoustics. Higher tones emitted at shorter intervals mean you are getting closer to buried victims. The Sophisticated sound sequence clearly signals when buried victims are near.

3+ Flagging Function

The Number of people buried is shown in a list on the display of the 3+. As soon as you have found the first one, you can quickly and reliably block out the signal with the Flagging Button. The Buried person is shown as being flagged and you can continue searching for other people. This function does not apply for the Ortovox Zoom and is only unique to Ortovox.

3+ Fine Search

In the refined search area, the patented circular display shows you whether you are getting closer to the victim or moving away from him/her in increments of 10 cm. The optimized, distinct search acoustics supports you in the search by pitch of the tone and volume.

  4. Professional Review

"The Ortovox 3+ is quite simply a great transceiver, regardless of your experience level. The lack of gimmicks means that Ortovox have created a unit that is simple to use and highly effective whether searching for single or multiple avalanche victims. Every single detail has been well designed, from the comfortable harness, to the single battery, and the easy to use buttons. I would not hesitate to recommend this transceiver to anyone, whether novice or expert. This is destined to become very popular."

    Spikes and Burials

    • The distance between the strongest signal and the transmitter is based on the way the two transceivers are positioned and the depth of the burial. This can possibly confuse signals if there in awkward positions and are known as spikes.
    • During deeper avalanche burials, the strongest signal is rarely directly above the victim. Transceivers with fewer than three antennas and some with three antennas will lead you to the strongest signal, which will be a point that is near but not directly above the victim.
    • When the transmitting and receiving beacons are on the surface of the snow, the receiving beacon will receive the strongest signal when it is directly above the transmitter. This is right regardless of the positioning of the two beacons and the number of antennas in the receiving transceiver because the transceivers are only a few inches from each other.

    Simple Spike Testing

    • Put a transmitting beacon between your feet, pointing vertically. Note that this should not be an Ortovox 3+,S1+ or Zoom+ due to there orientation-based transmitting.
    • Set the transceiver you want to test on Search.
    • Hold the transceiver horizontally at the height of your chest but so you can still read the screen.
    • Slowly move the transceiver from about two feet from your body toward the centre of your body. Move it about two inches per beep. Keep the transceiver a consistent distance from the ground and avoid twisting it.
    • The distance on the transceiver thatís searching should decrease as it moves towards the centre of your body. Transceivers with less then three antennas will display the shortest distance when it is a foot or two away from the centre of your body and again when it is directly over the transmitting transceiver.
    • This test shows if your transceiver handles spikes at one meter. Spike handling is much more significant with deeper burials.

Before using your transceiver you should always register it online so you can get full warranty on your product aswell as checking for brand new updates which are available.
