Package Product information

BCA DTS Tracker 2

The Tracker 2 offers the industry's fastest, most precise pinpointing, triple antennae, instantaneous real time display and the same easy-to-use interface as Tracker DTS.

An intuitive mechanical search/transmit switch makes it easier to use "out of the box".

The Tracker 2 is very slim and lightweight, in fact 23% lighter than the Tracker DTS. The switch to go into search mode is very easy to use and the speed of picking up a transmitting transceiver is superb.

Multiple burial victim lights and three antennae make this transceiver a sophisticated and reliable piece of equipment for any avalanche rescue team.

The pulse rate of information received takes you straight to the victim in record time and there is no time lag in information due to the super fast processor.

Terrawest Core Shovel

The Terrawest Core Shovel is a light, extremely practical shovel with a great strength-to-weight ratio, built for use by all off-piste skiers or back-country expeditions.

This is an all Aluminium shovel that is collapsible into 3 parts for efficient transport, or 2 parts for fast assembly in an emergency.

The telescopic function also means that the shovel can be used at full length, for maximum power, or at a shorter length for the greatest possible efficiency of movement in tighter spaces.

A classic T-Style grip means this shovel is easy to use and a strong, anodized Aluminium (6061), means the blade will not fail, regardless of load or conditions.

Ortovox 240 Light PFA Probe

The probe for all weight-conscious winter sport athletes.

At 270g it is the lightest pfa aluminum probe in the Ortovox probe range.

With the pfa quick-release tensioning system and the rugged Dyneema draw line, it is ready for use in seconds and just as quickly collapsed again and reassembled.

With a length of 240 cm, the burial depth can be read on the individual segments for accurate detection of buried victims.

It fits ergonomically in the hand due to the EVA foam grip.

Like all ORTOVOX probes, the 240 Light pfa is delivered with a practical quick-release cover.

"What are the differences between the BCA Tracker 1, Tracker 2 and Tracker 3Ē

Tracker 1 uses 2 antenna. The Tracker 2 and Tracker 3 use 3 antenna. The 3rd antenna is used during the last stage of the search to pin point the accuracy by the distance indication, which eliminates the "null spot/spike" that occurs when the receiving antenna is perpendicular to the flux field direction. This will make the Tracker 2 appear much smoother in the final search stage. The Tracker 3 operates the same 3 antenna system as the Tracker 2 but is almost 30% faster.

The antenna in the Trackers 2 + 3, immediately on start up and then periodically once switched on, balance themselves against each other whilst taking into account temperature to make the directional information more accurate.

The Real Time Display on the Trackers 2 + 3 processes the input signal instantly and updates the display at the same time. This is to prevent users overshooting the target transceiver as they tend to move faster when they get near the target.

During Signal Lock-On, the Tracker 1 displays all signals received within 10 metres and then locks onto the strongest signal and hides the others. The Trackers 2 does this from any distance and will only ever guide you to the strongest signal (i.e. the closest). You can override this by going into special mode however, and the Tracker 3 has extra options of suppressing any of your multiple burial signals in any direction or distance.

The Trackers 2 + 3 have a multiple burial light that comes on to alert you that although you are only seeing one transceiver, there are multiple signals present. If the light is flashing (in time with the beeps) it means the Tracker believes these signals are very close together.

The reception range of the Tracker 2 is greater by 10m that that of the Tracker.

The Tracker 2 + 3 are also quicker to put back into transmit mode in the case of a secondary avalanche.

The Tracker 3 is 30% lighter, smaller and faster than the Tracker 2.

How to Shovel Correctly:

  • After reading the depth of the victim using the snow probe move downhill
  • Start digging a trench into the snow towards the victim.
  • The trench should be the same length as the depth of the victim
  • This is to allow space to clear previously dug snow.
  • If multiple shovelers are available then one person should be digging down at the point of the probe and the other people or person should be clearing snow out of the trench to allow room.
  • These roles should be rotated to keep shovelers fresh.

Probing Techniques

Beacon Search Probing

The pinpoint search (within three meters) is the trickiest part

of a beacon search. A probe can quickly confirm the location and depth of burial.

Probes with depth markings aid in determining exact depth

and in determining the appropriate excavation area size.

From your lowest distance reading, probe 10 in (25cm)

apart in an expanding spiral pattern.

Since the pinpoint search is done along the snow surface, insert

probe perpendicular to the surface, not straight down.

After striking the victim, leave in place and start shoveling

downhill of the probe.

Recommended probe length: 1.8 to 3 meters.

Spot Probing

Performed if beacons are not worn or not functioning.

Probe up to 6 feet deep (1.5 meters) in likely burial spots.

These include the fall line below last-seen-area; around the

victimís equipment on surface; above and below rocks &

trees; depressions, curves, and the toe of the debris pile.

Studies show that avalanche victims rarely survive below 6

feet (1.5 meters). Therefore a live recovery is more likely if

you probe more areas than if you probe deeper.

Recommended probe length: 2 to 3 meters.

Finding your serial number on the BCA DTS Tracker 2

  1. Unscrew the screw on the battery compartment
  2. Flip the lid and take out batteries if needs be
  3. Your serial number will consist of numbers and letters for example "C" "8" "1" "4" "7" "5" "J" "6"
  4. Spikes and Burials

    • The distance between the strongest signal and the transmitter is based on the way the two transceivers are positioned and the depth of the burial. This can possibly confuse signals if there in awkward positions and are known as spikes.
    • During deeper avalanche burials, the strongest signal is rarely directly above the victim. Transceivers with fewer than three antennas and some with three antennas will lead you to the strongest signal, which will be a point that is near but not directly above the victim.
    • When the transmitting and receiving beacons are on the surface of the snow, the receiving beacon will receive the strongest signal when it is directly above the transmitter. This is right regardless of the positioning of the two beacons and the number of antennas in the receiving transceiver because the transceivers are only a few inches from each other.

    Simple Spike Testing

    1. Put a transmitting beacon between your feet, pointing vertically. Note that this should not be an Ortovox 3+,S1+ or Zoom+ due to there orientation-based transmitting.
    2. Set the transceiver you want to test on Search.
    3. Hold the transceiver horizontally at the height of your chest but so you can still read the screen.
    4. Slowly move the transceiver from about two feet from your body toward the centre of your body. Move it about two inches per beep. Keep the transceiver a consistent distance from the ground and avoid twisting it.
    5. The distance on the transceiver thatís searching should decrease as it moves towards the centre of your body. Transceivers with less then three antennas will display the shortest distance when it is a foot or two away from the centre of your body and again when it is directly over the transmitting transceiver.
    6. This test shows if your transceiver handles spikes at one meter.Spike handling is much more significant with deeper burials.
    7. Before using your transceiver you should always register it online so you can get full warranty on your product aswell as checking for brand new updates which are available.
