This is the largest of Black Diamond's Dawn Patrol range, the Black Diamond Dawn Patrol 32 Avalung Backpack offers 32 Liters of packable space, in addition to room for the Avalung element (sold separately) for which this pack is fully equipped to the house.
Designed for maximum versatility, this pack has carry-systems for both skis and a snowboard, as well as the back-panel access found in the smaller packs. It also comes with pockets for ice tools, a helmet mount and a dedicated pocket for avalanche gear.
The Avalung system is designed to provide the buried skier oxygen in the case of an avalanche by drawing in air from around the pack and supplying it directly to the wearer via a mouthpiece. This function is invaluable for off-piste skiers facing risky or uncertain conditions.
The AvaLung system increases post-avalanche survival time from 15 minutes average survival time with no AvaLung to 58 minutes fresh air supply with Avalung. The average rescue time with an avalanche transceiver is 20 minutes.
Oxygen is pulled from the snowpack through a bivalve intake whilst carbon dioxide is expelled via the exhaust port at the bottom of the pack to prevent contamination of breathable air.
The mouthpiece is mounted on the shoulder for easy access, but should always be kept in the mouth when in particularly risky terrain.
