The trapezoidal design means that the shaft can be deployed immediately, without any time lost searching for the spring holes to lock. To activate the shovel in an emergency, simply press the spring-pin then extend the shaft.
When you’re trying to rescue a victim buried under an avalanche of densely packed snow, speed and effectiveness in shovelling through and transporting the maximum amount of snow possible are of the utmost importance.
The Black Diamond shovels’ shaft extends to the maximum length possible, giving you a more effective shovel.
Easy to Grip
Combined with the easy to grip handle, that will offer comfort whether you’re bare-handed or wearing gloves or mitts, you will be able to get to work quickly.
The blade is then designed to allow the maximum amount of snow to be shovelled and transported as quickly as possible, with steep-walled sides and a flat-bottomed design.
As the Deploy 7 has a greater blade volume than its little brother, this is the shovel to chose if you will be shifting large quantities of heavy snow and holes through the blade allow the shovel to be used as a dead man anchor.
The ergonomic design allows for speed and ease when shovelling and transporting large amounts of snow and the flat-bottom means you will be able to create smooth walls and platforms.
After an avalanche, the snow can become extremely solid and, teamed with ice, can be very difficult to cut through, so it is important that you use the correct shovelling technique to ensure you are able to uncover the victim in the shortest amount of time possible and don’t damage or break your shovel whilst doing so.
Don’t use unnecessary force that may cause the blade to bend and don’t attempt to lever a full blade of snow, as this may also cause serious damage to the blade.
Don’t attempt to use the shovel as a hammer.
It’s important to spray the spring buttons with silicone occasionally to prevent freezing.
If the sliding action of the shaft becomes sticky, disassemble the shovel and clean the separate parts.
If any damage to your shovel is incurred, no longer use it.
To collapse the shovel after use, push the spring pin back in and push the shaft into the blade.
To disassemble the shovel, simply push the spring pin in and then remove the shaft. Do the same to reassemble, except push the shaft back in.
When the handle has been compressed into the shovel blade, it becomes a compact unit which will easily fit into a backpack.
Shovels should be carried on you every time you go off a marked ski trail, along with your probe and transceiver.
Every one venturing into avalanche territory should go equipped with the necessary safety equipment. Remember a probe is useless without a TRANSCEIVER to locate the victim and a SHOVEL to dig them out once you have established their depth using the PROBE.
