Which countries in Europe receive the most avalanches?🆘
Blog image

Have you ever wondered which countries have the most Avalanches In Europe?

Avalanches are a threat to many countries in the world Including America, Japan and Australia,  Avalanches are the most common in Europe, the top 4 countries receive the most avalanches in europe:

1. Switzerland

The most well-known country to receive avalanches is probably Switzerland, not only because of many disasters but also because of the extensive snow avalanche research that has been performed for more than 60 years. Statistics from Switzerland indicate that about 25 people per year are killed in snow avalanche accidents, and about twenty living houses are damaged each year on average. Nearly 100 other kinds of buildings are affected each year, several roads are closed each winter. Switzerland uses SFR 26 million (ECU 15 million) per year in research and snow avalanche protection. In the extreme winter of 1951 more than 1,300 avalanches across swizterland destroyed 1,000 building and killed 99 people. It was a disastrous moment in swiss history that became known as the “winter of terror” From the 1970s there has been a significang fall in the number of avalanche fatalities in buildings and on transportation routes. It’s common that most skiers do not wear the right amount of avy gear, standardly known as an Avalanche Safety Kit, you should always carry a Transceiver, Shovel & Probe. Aswell as a avalanche kit you should wear a Avalanche Airbag and a small bandaid size Recco reflector.

2. Austria

In Austria, snow avalanches are a major natural hazard. Every year, Austrian society spends about 1 200 million Austrian Shillings on avalanche and torrent control, and 250–300 million Austrian Shillings on snow avalanche control. Like in Switzerland, 20–25 persons are killed by avalanches on a yearly basis. Most of these are ski tourists. Austria has around 114 avalanche accidents in average per season. Another catastrophic winter occurred in 1954 when 143 people were killed in Austria, most of them in Vorarlberg.

3. Italy

Italy suffered a deadly avalanche in Rigopiano that wiped out a luxury hotel and killed 29 people. The disaster was the deadliest avalanche in Italy in almost 100 years.
A combination of heavy snowfall and seismic activity in the Abruzzo region is thought to have caused the avalanche. The snow slide weighed 120,000 tonnes and hit the Hotel Rigopiano with a speed of around 100km/h – a force equivalent to 4,000 trucks.

4. France

In 1970, an avalanche crashed down on a ski resort in Val d’Isere, France, killing 42 people, mostly young skiers. This disaster was the worst Avalanche in French history. The resort at Val d’Isere was operated by a nonprofit youth organization and attracted many young ski enthusiasts. approximately 100,000 cubic yards of snow came rushing down the mountain into a hotel and Thirty-nine people inside the hotel lost their lives to the avalanche and 60 more suffered serious injuries.

Other countires

Other countries to receive deadly avalanches are Spain, Russia, Iceland, Sweden and Norway. In Iceland, another heavily affected country, 64 people have been killed in snow avalanches and slush floods since 1974, two people per year on average.
In Norway, about five people are killed every year in snow avalanches. Major avalanche winters seem to occur every thirteen years on average.  ten to twenty persons are killed.

Conclusion

As mentioned earlier in the blog, skiing avalanche prone areas is no game, you need knewledge of skiing in backcountry terrain and how to use Avalanche Safety Equipment correctly, including Avalanche Transceiver, Shovel and Probe, Avalanche Airbags and more.
