Don’t get hit with Ski and Snowboard luggage fees at the airport! 

Flying to your favourite resorts this winter season and thinking of taking your own Ski and Snowboard Luggage,  Ensure you check your airline’s sports luggage fees beforehand, some airlines cost an arm and a leg. Thanks to BA and Swiss airlines they offer free carriage as long as you do not exceed the limits. Here we have created a guide (only) to those popular airlines who add on those nasty extra fees.

Most airlines will charge for two pieces of luggage, with Easyjet you will have to pay for your sports equipment and luggage bags, Swiss Air  and few other airlines allow free sports equipment. it’s important to pack all of your clothing and avy equipment within your ski and snowboard luggage to ensure you pay no fees.


Air Lingus

Do they allow ski equipment to be carried as part of your normal allowance?

 No

What baggage do they allow?

The check-in baggage must be bought in addition to the air fare. The fees start from €50 at the airport, or you can purchase online for a discount. Except on flights from Ireland to North America 
Carriage Fee  €50 at the airport, €40 when paid online.

What can you carry?

A maximum of 1 pair of skis, poles and boots can be carried per person and can be booked online or a maximum of 1 snowboard can be carried per person and can be booked online.

What are the maximum luggage dimensions? Max weight 23kg.
Equipment Fees  Ski and snowboard equipment fees will cost €50/£40 at the airport or €40/£40 online.

Air France 

Do they allow ski equipment to be carried as part of your normal allowance?

Yes, but not for Light and Basic fare tickets.

What baggage do they allow?

Standard ticket – 1x free hold luggage. Mini price ticket – 1st checked baggage item €60 (economy ) 80 euros (premier ) if bought at the airport or purchase online for a discount

Carriage Fee

No ski fee. Additional baggage needs to be purchased with Light and Basic fare tickets.

What can you carry?

1 pair of skis and poles and 1 boot bag or 1 snowboard and 1 boot bag.

What are the maximum luggage dimensions?

Max length 300cm, max weight 23kg.

You will need to get approval in advance to transport an avalanche bag from the customer service department

Equipment Fees

No equipment fee for skis and snowboards (except for Light and Basic fare tickets).


Alitalia

What can you carry?  1 pair of skis and 1 boot bag or 1 snowboard and 1 boot bag.
What are the maximum luggage dimensions?  Max length 320cm, max weight 23kg in. Boot bag max 114cm (total dimensions).

Equipment Fees  Once you have used your free bag allowance, ski equipment will cost $28.05 (when travelling to, through or from Brazil)

British Airways

Standard ticket – 1x free hold luggage, an additional bag costs £65 at the airport, you can purchase online for a discount.

What can you carry?

1 pair of skis and 1 pair of poles or 1 snowboard.

What are the maximum luggage dimensions?

Max length 190cm, max weight 23kg if packed in a bag made for ski/snowboard equipment.

Standard ticket – 1x free hold luggage, an additional bag costs from £37 up to 20kg at the airport, you can purchase online for a discount.

What can you carry?

1 pair of skis and 1 pair of poles or 1 snowboard.

What are the maximum luggage dimensions?

Max weight 20kg


Finnair

Do they allow ski equipment to be carried as part of your normal allowance?

Yes

What baggage do they allow?

Standard ticket – 1x free hold luggage, an additional bag costs from €40 at the airport, you can purchase online for a discount.

Carriage Fee

N/A

What can you carry?

1 pair of skis and 1 pair of poles or 1 snowboard

What are the maximum luggage dimensions?

Max length 220cm, max weight 23kg.

Equipment Fee

If you wish to travel with both a ski and snowboard bag, you will need to pay an extra bag charge.

Ski/snowboard shoes packed in a separate bag count as one item of checked-in baggage and if it exceeds the allowance, you will need to pay an extra bag charge.


Flybe  

Do they allow ski equipment to be carried as part of your normal allowance?

No

What baggage do they allow?

You must buy check-in baggage in addition to the air far. Fees start from £40 at the airport or you can purchase online for a discount.

Carriage Fee

Sports equipment fee is £35. You should look to pre-booking through customer service as there is limited space.

What are the maximum luggage dimensions?  Max weight 20kg, max length – Q400 aircraft 167cm, E195/E175 aircraft 250cm.
Equipment Fees  Skis and snowboard are considered to be carried as exceptional items of baggage. They are accepted through any pre-paid or inclusive hold luggage allowance. The fee for the carriage of skis and snowboards is £30/€40.

Iberia 

Do they allow ski equipment to be carried as part of your normal allowance?  Yes (long haul only)
What baggage do they allow?  Standard ticket – 1x free hold luggage, an additional bag costs €60 at the airport, or you can purchase online for a discount.
Carriage Fee  €45 for the short and medium haul.
What can you carry?  1 pair of skis, 1 pair of poles and 1 pair of boots or 1 snowboard and 1 pair of boots.
What are the maximum luggage dimensions?  Max weight 23kg.
More Info  Check in advance for additional baggage purchases as not all airports allow this (buying online will be cheaper).

Equipment Fees

 If you add other items in excess to your baggage allowance, you will be charged $81 (£61.68) for the first piece of ski equipment and $120 (£91.37) for the second piece of ski equipment, according to the Brazilian Civil Aviation Authority ANAC regulation.

KLM

What are the maximum luggage dimensions? Max dimensions 250cm x 79cm x 112cm (LxHxW), max weight 20kg.
Equipment Fees £30-£35 online, £40-£60 at the airport, £50 online and £60 at the airport for the international long haul (all items charged per item).

Ryanair

What baggage do they allow?

You must buy check-in baggage in addition to the airfare. Fees start from £30 from the airport or you can purchase online for a discount.
