Snowsafe breakdown everything you need to know about the Ortovox AVABAG:

How does the Ortovox AVABAG work?

The AVABAG airbag unit is the lightest canister powered airbag on the market, weighing just 690g.

Compact.

The activation unit sits inside the venturi, creating a Completely Sealed, Robust System that functions without electricity. Dirt, ice and corrosion can all be excluded.

Effective.

The Innovative Welding Technology used to make the airbags ensures a compact pack size while Improving Its Resistance to Tearing and Leaks.

How does the AVABAG airbag power up without electricity?

Unlike the Alpride E1 & Jetforce Airbag which run off of electricity, the Ortovox AVABAG does not depend on a battery, Its Canister Powered.

This means you do not have to charge up AVABAG unit in order to deploy it. simply screw the lightweight AVABAG carbon cartridge into the venturi unit within Avabag compatible Backpack.

The canister is one time use only and should be refilled every two seasons.

AVABAG Airbag Filling time

Safety Blue - Inflated Airbag - Ortovox Ascent 30 Avabag

The Ortovox AVABAG filling time is one of the fastest on the market with a approximate time of 3.3 seconds from pulling the trigger.

To make sure your deployments are fast make sure you have set your handle to the right height and ensure its easy to access.

How do you deflate your AVABAG Unit

Ventilation System - Ortovox Ascent 30 Avabag Backpack

On AVABAG unit there is a button which allows you to hold and squeeze out the air from the AVABAG. The air is released out of the Ventilation System. You can hold this button where the O sits on the outside of the Ortovox AVABAG Backpacks.

Is the AVABAG Unit removable?

Ortovox Avabag Unit + Avabag Cartridge

Yes the AVABAG unit is Quick and Easy To Move to any Ortovox AVABAG compatible backpack.

This allows you pack a 40 Litre for multi day ski tours and then change remove your AVABAG unit to a 22 litre for freeriding the backcountry.

Can you run test activations with the AVABAG?

Avabag Venturi Unit with Rearming tool

Different to any other gas powdered airbags on the market, the AVABAG System allows you to Test as Much As You Like and As Often As You Like without an installed cartridge, This will ensure that the wearer is able to react appropriately in a real avalanche situation.

Simply screw the Ortovox Rearming Tool into the AVABAG unit until you cant screw anymore, unscrew the tool and Pull your activation handle, if you hear a popping sound then it means its been a succesful activation.

If your Ortovox AVABAG canister was installed, this popping sound would be the pin piercing your canister to release the compressed gas to deploy your airbag.
